Welfare and Safeguarding 2 of 4

2. Suitability of Staff and Volunteers

How we ensure the OWHC staff and volunteers are suitable to work with young people:

OWHC believes that when appointing people to work with young people in hockey, child wellbeing is paramount. The aim of any recruitment process is to ensure that any legal responsibilities are met, that the most appropriate person is appointed to the role, and all necessary checks have been undertaken before the individuals begins working with young people.

OWHC will follow a robust process (outlined in the England Hockey Safeguarding Master Document, find on Welfare and Safeguarding Document page), essential to keeping young people safe in hockey.

In accordance with England Hockey’s Safeguarding Policy, OWHC follow England Hockey’s recruitment guidance by ensuring that we are registered on England Hockey’s DBS system, have at least one active DBS Verifier (who is our Club Welfare Officer) and that we actively use the DBS system to complete DBS checks on the appropriate individuals, which are renewed every 3 years.

For more information regarding England Hockey DBS checks can be found on this page.

Code of Conduct

England Hockey is responsible for setting the standards and values that apply at every level of hockey as outlined in the Code of Ethics and Behaviour booklet, also known as Respect.

As a member of England Hockey, OWHC adopts this Code and expects our staff and volunteers to adhere to it.

England Hockey and therefore OWHC takes any breaches of the Code of Ethics and Behaviour seriously. If you believe that a breach has taken place, please report it to our Club Welfare Officers.
