Backs against the wall this week for OW’s when they found out that they only had the bare eleven to go to Kings Alleyn via the South Circular for a 10:30 pushback. They knew that this was going to be a hard match with 12 but to then find out they only had 11 it just shows what OW’s are made of as they rolled up their sleeves and welcomed the challenge.

Captain Becky Basso decided to enforce changes in the formation of the team this week to suit the game in front of them and this paid off dividends, as from the push back OW’s took the game to KA and within two minutes of the start OW’s were 1-0, courtesy of the captain after some good pressure in the KA ‘D’. Hanna Miller paced down the right flank and her cross was sweetly met by Becky Basso who slotted into the goal.

Minutes later OW’s added another when Emma Lambkin’s shot at goal was saved on the line by a KA foot, so a penalty flick was awarded. Kirsty Sullivan bravely stepped up to the challenge and flicked a beautiful ball into the back of the net.

KA were a bit rattled at this point and tried to compose themselves, but before they knew it they were 3-0 down when a superb move by OW’s enabled them to go 3-0 up with probably the best goal of the game which started at the back with Kirsty Sullivan and involved a number of OW players, ending up with Emma Lambkin scoring from close range.

During the last couple of minutes of the first half KA managed to grab a goal back from a short corner strike.

OW’s knew that the second half would be hard seeing as they had no subs and KA had a couple so KA were lucky enough to be able to rotate and catch a breath. Player of the match Sarah Swain made some astounding runs down the left wing passing players like cones in training, which helped relieve the pressure in defence and allowed for some superb counter attacks. OW’s were determined not to let their lead slip and constantly battled to defend resolutely and also cause problems in the KA goal area. KA did manage to pull another goal back it wasn’t enough and eventually when the final whistle blew OW’s let out a big cheer. This was a great win for OW’s and thoroughly deserved – on to next week for Sevenoaks at home.
